The mastiff breed in general has many genetic health problems. We as mastiff breeders and stud
owners are advocates of extreme health testing before breeding any mastiff.
Only the healthiest mastiff males should ever be used at stud. The only reason anyone should breed his
mastiff is to try to improve the breed. Without good health as a basis for breeding all mastiffs we only
serve to perpetuate bad genes. Health issues for mastiffs may only be reduced by selecting healthy breeding
stock for your breeding program.
So, what do our mastiff stud dogs have to offer?
Our mastiff studs have been tested and certified to free of hip and elbow dysplasia, cardiac problems,
patellar sublaxation, thyroid disease, Von Willebrands disease, cystinuria and have been examined for genetic
eye defects by a board certified CERF vet. We put a lot of emphasis on breeding only proper easy-going
temperament. All of our mastiff studs are DNA registered with the American Kennel Club.
With recent progress we have made in the sciences, there are tests available today that pin-point the
best time to breed your bitch. Progesterone levels can accurately indicate the most fertile times to
breed. Testing is very reliable and really the way to go now. For this very reason we usually refer
owners of bitches to our veterinary reproductive specialist. When the bitch is ready, all breedings are
handled through either veterinary assisted side by side artificial insemination, non surgical trans-cervical
insemination or in cases where the bitches are geographically unavailable through shipment of fresh
chilled semen. At no time do we allow our males to participate in natural live cover matings or the
use of rape racks. We feel technology has offered us a much safer and more sanitary solution for
all involved.
